Five of the top 10 elementary schools in Western New York are Catholic according to the 2012 rankings for the region compiled by Business First.

St. Gregory the Great School (Williamsville) ranked second, followed by Southern Tier Catholic (Olean). Christ the King School (Snyder) ranked fifth, Nardin Academy (Buffalo), sixth, and the eighth ranking went to St. John Vianney (Orchard Park).

The annual report details, “The academic performance of 278 public and private elementary schools in the eight counties of Western New York based on four years of test data from the New York State Education Department,” according to the weekly Buffalo publication.

“We are extremely pleased with and proud of the high rankings our schools attained again this year,” said Carol Kostyniak, secretary for Catholic Education. “Catholic schools consistently rank among the very best in Western New York, and this survey affirms that status. Catholic school communities are devoted to educating the whole child. We stress academics, but faith formation and service to others are priorities from pre-school through high school, and that is what separates Catholic schools from all others.”

In the middle school category, four of the top 10 schools were Catholic. St. Peter (Lewiston) ranked fourth, followed by St. Gregory the Great (Williamsville) at five; St. Mark (Buffalo) ranked sixth and St. Christopher (Tonawanda) was eighth.

Nardin (Buffalo) is again the top-ranked high school in the region. Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart (Amherst) ranks third; St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute (Kenmore) is at number nine and Mount St. Mary Academy (Kenmore) ranked tenth.
